Sun safety for little ones
We protect babies with hats, sunscreen, sun shades and UV protective clothing, but what about their eyes?

Infant eye sensitivity
Our eyes are 10 times more sensitive to UV rays than our skin, and the eyes of babies and young children are even more sensitive to sunlight than adults.
The lens of a child’s eye will allow up to 70% more UV rays to enter the retina.
Infant eyelids are also more transparent, and the lenses of their eyes are more clear, which allows a shorter wavelength of light to reach their retina.

Future eye health
According to the World Health Organisation, 80% of a person's lifetime exposure to UV radiation occurs before the age of 18.
This cumulative exposure at a young age may contribute to the onset of other eye-related conditions in the future. This includes AMD (age-related macular degeneration) and cataracts.

NHS guidelines
The NHS advises that babies should be kept out of the sun entirely until they are 6 months old.
We recommend using baby sunglasses alongside tried and tested sun-safe products such as sunscreen, hats, sun shades and UV protective clothing.

Using your sunglasses
Petit Peepers sunglasses provide 100% UV protection, and they will also shade your baby from the bright light of the sunshine.
Take a look at our fit guide to make sure that your Petit Peepers sunglasses fit your child correctly.
While your baby is tiny, use the silicone strap to help keep the sunglasses in place.
